Position Description The Choir Director position is part time (approximately 5 to 10 hours per week, hours may vary throughout the year). The role of this position is to provide creative musical leadership to foster worship that glorifies God, contributes to the spiritual life of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, and integrates music with the worship experience to build and grow a welcoming and diverse community. Candidate Requirements
Previous choral direction experience and music background with emphasis on choral music and choir direction.
Music degree preferred but can be waived in lieu of prior experience.
Demonstrated ability to lead, inspire, and teach in a church choir setting.
Understanding of ELCA worship, church calendar/seasons, liturgies and selection of complimentary choral music. Specific requirements and position responsibilities include:
Embraces Christian teachings and understands the basis of Lutheran theology, worship, and liturgy within a service.
Demonstrates skill and experience in choral directing and knowledge of sacred choral repertoire.
Incorporates a wide range of musical styles in selecting choral pieces.
Encourages growth within the music ministry of St. Andrew by providing opportunities for church members to share their musical gifts.
Attends church planning meetings, as required, to plan and implement the music for worship services.
Within the allocated budget, selects and purchases choral pieces that are appropriate for the church liturgical season.
Prepares music for special services, especially during the Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter seasons.
Works with the organist/accompanist and directs choir rehearsals during evening practices and on Sunday mornings (traditional and/or contemporary services).
Directs choir presentations during a minimum of 27 Sundays per year plus special services (three Sundays per month from September through May plus special services).
Arranges for special music on Sundays from September through May when the choir is not presenting music.
Provides guidance for small groups and soloists during rehearsals.
Handles care and maintenance of the church’s music library.
Works with cooperation and servant leadership within a team environment.
Communicates and coordinates with church staff, as appropriate.
Works within the established annual budget.
Performs additional tasks as assigned.
